Now we have animals whose communication is complex – they produce sequences of different notes, with many different combinations, but not all of those combinations are equally likely. There is structure, there are rules dictating how to combine notes. And whatever rules they come up with, they can learn those rules from each other. On the face of it, you might think that all these rules actually reduce the complexity of communication – if not every combination is allowed, there are fewer possibilities, fewer sentences, fewer books that can be written. But that is not the case. In fact, those constraints, rules, syntaxes, learning, are precisely what enable the next step: from syntax to meaning.
